門の前を掃いている時、怪鳥がけたたましく飛んでいくので、そちらに目を取られた。
大きな鳥が何かを咥え嬉々として飛んでいく。空、雲、桜、幹、土に、見慣れない小さな塊が、かすかに動く。それが雛だった。
近づいていくと、それは絶え間なく鳴いていた。瞼は閉じられ、天に向けて大口を開く姿は、お世辞にも可愛いとは言えず、むしろ不恰好で嫌悪感のほうが勝った。しかし正義感は強きを挫く。弱きを助けた。
雛は案外強かった。すくすくと育っていくのを見ると愛着もわいた。
夏になって、触り心地が変わった。雛は飛ぶようになったが、遠くへはいかず、必ず帰ってくる。
秋になると、それはもう雛と呼ぶには立派すぎた。
琥珀のように艶のあるくちばし、喉元は白くふっさりと、基調は深まった秋に溶けこむような焦げ茶、暗い色で斑模様を描かれた先端までゆったりと伸びる両翼、はて、こんな種類の鳥がいただろうか。
冬になると、鳥はふっくらモコモコ丸くなる。この頃にはもう、私たちの間には確かな絆があった。寝食をできるだけ共にし、名前もつけてやった。
そうした日々に、ふと冷水を差したのは白玉楼の女主だった。
「楽しそうね」
冷たい廊下に彼女と私と雛と。庭は雪で白く染まっていた。
「ペットは禁止ですか？」
と、私は聞いた。いつもどおり。
「いいえ、ダメと言った覚えはありませんし、良いと言うつもりもありませんわ」
ふふ、と口元を手で覆って笑うときは、それほど愉快でない時の兆候だ。
「妖夢。世の外には、斬れぬものも、多いのよ」
次の日、私は雛を逃がした。
「斬れぬものなど、あんまり無い」
次の春、私は再び雛を見つけられるだろうか。
